1. The LLamasoft Era (1998–2020)
- Founding and Rise: Don Hicks founded LLamasoft in 1998. The company pioneered supply chain network optimization, eventually developing its flagship desktop-based software, Supply Chain Guru, which became the industry standard for enterprise logistics modeling. [1, 2]
- The Exit: In 2020, after leading the company for over two decades, Hicks sold LLamasoft to a private equity firm. Shortly thereafter, on November 2, 2020, Coupa Software acquired LLamasoft for $1.5 billion to absorb its capabilities into its spend management platform. [1, 2]
- The Core Limitation: Post-acquisition, the legacy LLamasoft technology remained tethered to rigid, desktop-dependent architectures requiring heavy manual data aggregation. [1, 2]
2. The Bridge to Optilogic (Around 2018–2021)
- After exiting LLamasoft, Hicks recognized that legacy desktop infrastructure could no longer handle the extreme volatility and data scale of modern global supply chains. [1, 2]
- He envisioned a cloud-native, hyperscale ecosystem. Instead of trying to patch old desktop code, he assembled an “All-Star team” of engineers and category pioneers from former industry leaders (including LLamasoft, LogicTools, and Opiant) to build a new platform entirely from scratch. [1, 2]
3. The Optilogic and “Cosmic Frog” Era (Present)
- A New Cloud Platform: Hicks launched Optilogic to offer a 100% browser-based SaaS alternative to Coupa/LLamasoft. [1]
- Cosmic Frog: Optilogic’s flagship supply chain design application, Cosmic Frog, allows companies to run massive “what-if” simulations, design digital twins, and calculate automatic risk scores at the individual SKU level without desktop software limitations. [1, 2, 3]
- Agentic AI Integration: To fully distance itself from the manual modeling required in the old LLamasoft days, Optilogic launched Ada, an embedded, agentic AI system. Teams can interact with the software using natural language to automatically cleanse data, run scenario paths, and generate defensible math models. [1, 2]
- The Bridge Back: To directly capture dissatisfied legacy users, Optilogic even deployed a free Llamasoft Model Converter, enabling organizations to automatically transition old Coupa/LLamasoft files directly into cloud-native Cosmic Frog environments. [1]
